Misson Statement

My name is Mitchell Dobies and I am running for the Republican nomination for Representative of the Fourth Congressional District in New Jersey. My campaign will be based on one issue and one issue alone; Representative Chris Smith’s vote on Cap and Trade and his betrayal of Republican principles and his electorate.
Lost in the hyperbole of President Obama’s health care plan is the issue of Cap and Trade which I believe in the long run will turn American into a third world nation. At that point in time, people’s health coverage might be the least of their problems. As I have gone around trying to discuss the issue of Cap and Trade with anyone willing to listen, I find that only three out of ten people are even aware of this bill. A smaller percentage of people are aware of the profound effect that this legislation will have on their lives and country. Most people think that Cap and Trade is a bill designed to improve the environment. It is anything but that. The main purpose of the bill is not to reduce the output of pollution but to charge businesses vast amounts of money for the right to do so. And who are among the biggest polluters in America? Petrochemical Plants and Utilities. These penalties demanded by this legislation will not be absorbed by these companies, but rather passed on to ordinary consumers in the form of a 300% increase in the price of electricity and gasoline. In addition, these price hikes will cost the average American family an additional $1,800 annually. Furthermore, what manufacturing business does not use oil or electric power? Every item manufactured in the United States will be struck by an agonizing inflationary spiral. The only other choice for many companies will be to expatriate jobs overseas sending our economy into a far worse tailspin. As the fable goes, the administration has appointed a “Green Jobs Commissar” named Van Jones, who was to undertake an effort to create 2 million “clean” jobs. To date, little or no jobs have been created. Instead, Mr. Jones busies himself hurling vulgar epithets at Republicans, making speeches calling for the creation of an entire new economic system in America, pushes for the redistribution of wealth (after all he is an avowed Communist) supported a movement to free a convicted cop killer, made claims that white people were poisoning blacks and immigrants and finally claim that the 9/11 terrorist strikes were really a government plot. This is a man who until recently had unfettered access to the President. It took weeks of negative publicity to finally remove this man from a position of power. For six weeks not one work of Van Jones’ political agenda was mentioned in the mainstream press. It was only because of the work of Fox News that this situation was brought public scrutiny. Who knows what sort of person will replace him? Once again, as the fable goes, America is merely pacing world opinion and everyone will be following our example. Nothing can be further from the truth. The two most prolific rising economic powers in the Far East, India and China, have flatly refused all attempts by the administration to follow our lead. In the meantime, while their economies are growing at a rate of 6 to 8% ours is contracting. Their attitudes towards pollution and their exclusion from the Kyoto Accords was exactly the reason that former President Bush also declined to sign the bill. While Americans might generate more pollution per capita, China and India, in order to fuel their economic growth, are the most savage polluters on the face on this earth, with total disregard on the effects of their population. Anyone supporting Obama’s policy is no better than Obama himself. We have nothing to apologize for to any country in the world. We are facing the greatest threat to our survival as a country since the Civil War. I do not want avowed Communists, Socialists and Revolutionaries having a say in running our country. We must find a way to cross the bridge from a fossil fuel based economy to one that is run by renewable resources. Cap and Trade is not the answer in any way, shape or form.
How was this appalling legislation passed? On a Friday morning at 2:00am the thousand page bill was finally printed for review by the House of Representatives. At 5:00am a 300 page amendment was added to the bill. Our Congressmen and women must all wake up very early and have been trained in speed reading in order to have passed this bill by end of business that day. Given the controversy over who actually bothered to read this bill, the bigger question is who actually wrote the bill and what is their political agenda.
Despite intense political pressure from Nancy Pelosi, 44 Democrats crossed over party lines to vote against the bill while only 8 Republicans, including Chris Smith currently representing the Fourth Congressional District voted for the bill. This was exactly the margin of victory for this destructive legislation, and I truly believe that any Republican who voted for this bill should be thrown out of office as soon as possible. If you live in Central New Jersey and watch television you could not help but see on your tube the millions of dollars being spent on ads by special interest groups directed solely at influencing Mr. Smith’s vote. Who knows what other “political benefits” resulted from his betrayal of his party and constituency? When will be the next time that Mr. Smith feels the necessity to act this way again?
And who is benefiting from this bill? Certainly not the American people. Goldman-Sachs and General Electric Financial stand to make tens of billions of dollars by creating a marketplace where the right to pollute will be bought and sold. Coincidentally, these two financial institutions were major contributors to the Obama Presidential campaign. Al Gore, who generates more pollution on one flight on his private jet than most of us do in a year, will make billions of dollars from companies in which he made very modest investments.
I deeply believe in preserving our environment. My family and I recycle, do not use paper products, plastic utensils or Styrofoam and do whatever we can to save electricity in our household. We also follow the same regimen while running our small family owned business and try to maintain a paperless environment as much as possible. I believe in using as much clean and renewable energy sources as possible. One of the biggest mistakes our country ever made in its energy policy was the cessation of the construction of nuclear power plants. Today, France generates approximately 80% of their electric needs from nuclear power and have developed methods which have reduced nuclear waste 90%. It bothers me deeply that France could possibly do anything better than America. I believe in wind power but the huge weather vanes must be placed where the wind is and its direction predictable. That includes Martha’s Vineyard where the rich and powerful and political leaders go to party. The cancellation of this wind project off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard is a classic example of N.I.M.B.Y. (not in my backyard). I believe some day we will be generating massive amounts of renewable energy from our ocean’s tides. This last item is exactly the kind of project that the stimulus bill should be investing in. We should not be burning out our farmers in California’s bread basket for the sake of some tiny fish whose best use is bait. I believe in Hybrid cars saving us massive amounts of fossil fuel, but I do not believe in electric cars. Where do people think the electricity comes from to charge these cars? Is it produced by the Keebler elves in their tree or by coal and oil fired power plants? I believe that our energy needs should be solved and financed primarily by the stimulus package instead of giving billions of dollars to earmarks, failed companies, politically connected financial institutions and ACORN.
Like most Americans I was never politically involved and took for granted my freedoms and the greatness of my country. My voting record is extremely spotty and have done my best to avoid Jury Duty. It is only now as I see my country being destroyed by a left wing communist agenda that I have decided to stand up and be counted. Washington has become a festering stinkhole of greed, corruption and special interests. We are becoming Mexico. Cap and Trade is the straw that broke my back and was my “call to arms”. I am just a poor kid from Brooklyn who has seen vast swings in his fortune. I am no politician nor do I plan to act as one for long. I am far from perfect. I am sure that my opponent, the political establishment and the special interest groups who support Chris Smith will examine me with a microscope and find many minor flaws which they will harp on. My tenure as representative will be devoted to representing my constituency instead of my own personal interests.
The planks of my political platform are simple:
1. I will never accept one penny from private interest groups.
2. I will only accept contributions from concerned citizens and small businesses.
3. I will work my tail off for everything that the Fourth Congressional District needs.
4. However, I will never accept earmarks which are nothing more than legal payoffs from powerful politicians.
5. I have no plans to be a lifetime politician. My goals are to remain around long enough to unseat Chris Smith, watch the end of the Obama revolution, and help return Washington back to the will of the people.
I look forward to the opportunity to serve you as your new Congressman in the Fourth Congressional District, and to always put your interests first.
